Reebok Fall Showcase Frosh/Sophs
By Chris Roemer
Aarika Warren, Forward - In a brief appearance at the camp Warren contributed to her Berkeley High team in a positive way. The strong bodied forward utilized her athleticism around the rim in transition and on the glass as a rebounding pressence. On the wing Warren could get by her man with her strength and explosiveness. If the rumors circulating the gym hold to be true then she would be a good addition to the Cal Poly Pomona basketball program.
Nikki Beckman, Guard - It will be interesting to see how Beckman continues to develop. She still appears to be that shooting guard transforming into a point guard. She has adequate control of her handle coupled with a relentless motor with unrelenting effort. A score first point Beckman can shoot it with range and displays a nice looking floater she utilizes upon driving in the lane.
Deanna Calhoun, Center - There's no question Calhoun is a nice looking prospect. At
a solid 6-foot-3 she ran the floor well and exhibited some pretty decent hands and
feet. Showing some flashes she scored with both power and finesse. Calhoun also
exposes the presence of a nice shooting stroke in her contests. However, her
production is somewhat inconsistent. She tends to have moments where she removes
herself from the game and doesn't impose that size, strength and advantage like one
would think. A atter of becoming tougher which will only further validate her as a
solid prospect.
Brittany Boyd, Point Guard - A guard widely known throughout the region for her
previous years exploits Boyd is a player that brought no shortage of exhilarating and
scintillating plays during the camps duration. Once she stepped on the floor for her
Berkeley High unit she turned up the intensity, playing a fierce brand of basketball.
She uses her strength and quickness combined with a strong, lively handle to make
sharp moves through the floor and by her defender. Once by her defender she was
able to alter her angle in order to convert. Boyd was far more dangerous when she
took advantage of her play making ability to distribute as well as create her own shot.
Some sequences however she lost sight of this empowering concept. Rather than
being the dangerous double edged sword her shot volume soared while the shot
selection decreased.
Chairese Culberson, Forward - A great frame excellent hands and a quick leaper.
Around the basket she is very explosive, she will lull you to sleep and then she gets
the ball in her hands and it is in the basket. She possesses the ability to leap over
defenders and is an excellent offensive rebounder with a knack for getting position and
finishing. Right now she has a tendency to rest on defense and allows players to get
position and relies on her length and jumping ability to block shots. If she is to fulfill
her potential she will have to improve her range offensively and play with more
consistency on both ends of the floor. She could be a mid major 4 man right now, if
she wants to make the jump to high major she will have to play away from the basket.
There is time and the physical skills are there. It will depend on how hard she wants to
work.
Elisah Davis, Guard - Berkeley High will definitely receive a lift in the department of effort and energy from this freshman. The charismatic Davis provided some big time plays for the yellow jackets and her non-stop motor is a great compliment to their defensive and offensive styles. Most of her production came at the hand of timely threes off the catch, and some of those being from deep. She was a great spark plug that never seemed to wilt. While her energy is a great plus sometimes it got the best of her. She appears to be done growing so transitioning to the point or learning that role will be key to her development.
